Christiaan van Veen is NT2 teacher and teacher trainer in NT2 at VU University Amsterdam and author of Nederlands naar de top (Dutch to the top); an NT2 method from C1 to C2. In this interview, he talks about the motivations behind the book, the didactic choices that underlie it, and how NT2 teachers can use this method in their teaching.

To pass the Staatsexamen NT2 Programme I, you must be able to read, listen, write and speak at B1 level. For the Staatsexamen NT2 Programme II you need to master these skills at B2 level. There are different ways you can work towards these language levels. You can take a language course, study by yourself and practice with sample exams.

To pass the civic integration exam, you must be able to read, listen, write and speak in Dutch at language level B1. In addition, you must have knowledge of Dutch society to pass the Knowledge of Dutch Society (KNM) section. In this section, you have to answer questions about how people in the Netherlands interact and what rules there are. In the Module Labor Market and Participation (MAP), you show that you understand how the labor market works. Finally, you must sign a participation declaration after following the Participation Declaration Program (PVT). With the participation declaration you show that you understand which values are important in the Netherlands.

How can we best prepare ISK students for their future? How do we ensure that newcomers to the Netherlands not only master the Dutch language but also build a solid foundation for further education? That question led to the creation of KIK — a teaching method that combines language learning with content and practical subjects. We spoke with Anne Marije de Goeijen from ITTA, who, together with her colleagues, developed this unique method. In our conversation, she talks about language as a means rather than a goal, bridging the gap between NT2 (Dutch as a second language) and mainstream education, and how KIK helps students discover their talents and interests.
