The math or calculus lesson can be incredibly linguistic. This is not easy for non-native children when they do not yet have a good command of the Dutch language. Therefore, we would like to give you tips on how to get started with math and calculus language.

WISK | Accessible math language learning

WISK covers more than 250 math words as used in mathematics methods for junior vmbo/havo and vwo. The method offers many practical exercises and clear full-color illustrations that help make concepts such as “parallel” and “opposite sides” understandable to the ISK student.

Clear and communicative

The strength of WISK lies in its clarity, overview and in the classroom component, in which all forms of language acquisition are addressed (speaking, writing, listening and reading). Communicating about mathematics is of great importance to learn and consolidate a mathematical understanding in the right way.

Straight from practice

The method WISK was written by a math teacher in an ISK. It addresses the concrete problems that foreign-language learners encounter within Dutch mathematics education.

Publications on two levels

WISK consists of a workbook and textbook in one and is available at two levels. For route 1 & 2 there is WISK-X and for route 3 there is WISK-Y. The method consists of 6 chapters (30 lessons) and 6 tests. In the book you will find a code that gives access to the online extra material in NT2 School.

RISK | Math without language barriers

RISK is a digital math method for non-native speakers in ISK. The method distinguishes math “where the language is left out as much as possible” and math “with language". Thus, students work on their math skills without experiencing a language barrier, as in many general math methods.

In the 'language' section, where math and language come together, as many basic concepts needed to understand the sum as possible are offered. The sentences of context sums are short, there is no written instruction, but there is visual and audio support.

The structure in RISK is such that in principle, after achieving a satisfactory result, a student can make the next assignment using the knowledge and skills previously acquired.

Also as a regular math method

RISK is for both beginning and advanced math learners and can be used as a regular math method. With attention to basic skills such as counting, addition and multiplication but also contextual arithmetic and the basics of mathematics. You determine the starting situation of the student through the entry tests and pre-setters.

Autonomy and direct feedback

Within RISK, each student works independently at their own level on their own learning goal. Because RISK gives the student direct feedback for each assignment, the student is motivated to continue or choose a different strategy. He is in control! Each student works in their own environment, thus there is plenty of room for differentiation and the teacher has room for customized guidance.
