Literacy is learning to read and write letters, then to be able to read and write words, sentences and simple texts.
For alpha students, learning through explicit instruction is complicated because they cannot read and often have low language levels. On top of that, they have often only been to school for a short time, so so-called school skills are also new to these learners. For example, they cannot take notes and will not understand grammar rules. In Western education, rules are often an important tool for learning a language.
