For intermediate educated Dutch language learners
In zicht is primarily designed for intermediate educated learners in practical professions. It is also suitable for more highly educated learners who need a little more time and repetition when learning Dutch.
The step from A2 to B1 is a significant one. Learners need to expand their vocabulary to around 5,000 words and develop a broader foundation in grammar. According to the authors, it is particularly important that learners are able to apply this new knowledge in practice. It is not just about knowing words and grammar rules, but about being able to use them in situations they encounter in everyday life.
Step by step towards independent language use
One of the key features of In zicht is its clear and consistent structure. Each chapter covers all language skills through a wide variety of activities. The method follows Neuner’s ABCD model. Learners start with receptive activities and gradually progress towards more productive and open ended tasks.
New language is first introduced through listening and visual input, without requiring learners to produce it straight away. The level of difficulty then gradually increases. Learners first practise new words, structures and communicative functions before using the language more independently. This approach provides support and helps learners gain confidence in speaking and writing Dutch.
You don’t have to throw learners in at the deep end straight away. A step by step approach gives them the confidence to start using the language independently.
Language for daily life
In In zicht, topics and communicative functions from everyday life take centre stage. The authors partly draw on the communicative functions covered in the Dutch State Exam, Programme I, particularly in the Speaking and Writing sections. However, the exam is not the only point of reference.
The activities are mainly based on situations that learners encounter at work and in their everyday lives. Feedback from Dutch language teachers who use In zicht has also been incorporated into the revised edition. This feedback has led to changes in the final three chapters, among other things. This ensures that the method continues to reflect the situations in which learners actually use Dutch.
What has been updated?
Society is constantly changing, and so is the language learners need. As a result, some situations, texts and words from previous editions no longer reflected everyday life as closely as they once did. The revised edition provided an opportunity to update the method thoroughly.
It now covers current topics, including the use of AI in everyday life. Words and expressions that have become part of everyday Dutch have also been added, such as ‘een tikkie sturen’ (sending someone a payment request). Chapters 6, 7 and 8 feature new themes, and many new reading and listening texts have been added.
Grammar is also introduced more gradually. Explanations have been divided into smaller sections where necessary, and additional exercises have been added. Word webs with colour illustrations have also been introduced to help learners practise practical vocabulary.
More visuals, audio and colour
The design of In zicht has also been extensively updated. The book is now fully in colour and includes many more photographs and illustrations. These not only make the material more appealing, but also support the learning process. Audio and visual support has also been expanded, allowing new language to be introduced in different ways.
What remains the same?
The foundations of In zicht remain unchanged. The method consists of eight themes, each divided into theme A and theme B. The four language skills are practised both separately and in combination. Grammar, practical vocabulary, Neuner’s ABCD model, additional online exercises and tests for each theme also remain part of the method.
Van start and In zicht
In zicht follows on from Van start, the first part of the learning pathway for intermediate educated learners. Van start takes learners from level 0 to A2, while In zicht continues from A2 to B1.
Van start has also been fully revised, with new grammar topics, more listening and reading texts, activities outside the classroom, and additional attention to learning how to learn, practical vocabulary and pronunciation. Together, Van start and In zicht form a continuous learning pathway for intermediate educated Dutch language learners.

Wim Tersteeg en Sandra Duenk
Sandra Duenk geeft sinds 2002 met veel plezier Nederlandse les aan anderstalige volwassenen. Na haar studie Nederlandse taal en literatuur deed ze ervaring op bij verschillende taalscholen en leerde ze hoe veelzijdig het NT2-vak is.
Met een master Nederlandse taal en letterkunde (specialisatie taalontwikkeling en variatie) en met werkervaring bij verschillende taalinstituten op zak schreef zij diverse NT2-lesmethodes met als doel: elke taalleerder een mooi en goed georganiseerd boek bieden.
Wim Tersteeg studeerde Engelse Taal en Letterkunde aan de Universiteit Utrecht maar verlegde zijn focus na zijn afstuderen al snel naar NT2. Inmiddels geeft hij al ruim 30 jaar cursussen NT2 op alle niveaus, de laatste jaren voornamelijk maatwerktrainingen. Daarnaast is hij ook beoordelaar van de examenonderdelen spreken en schrijven van de Staatsexamens Nt2 programma I en II. Wim is co-auteur van de serie Van start en In zicht (voor midden opgeleiden) en de serie De opmaat, De sprong en De finale (voor theoretisch opgeleiden).
