Waartoe is Nederland op aarde? is the first publication in collaboration with Centrum Èthos, the academic institute at the VU University of Amsterdam founded by Ad Verbrugge. Edited by Gabriël van den Brink, this volume contributes to the debate on Dutch identity.
The authors consider 'the Netherlands' a relevant category.
This does not speak for itself at a time when many believe that the phenomenon of the nation state is doomed. Processes like globalisation and European unification have a major impact on a country, and it remains to be seen whether there is such a thing as an unchanging or homogenous identity at all.
However, the uniqueness of Dutch society can be mapped out, provided one sees it as a specific mix of economic, political and cultural practices that, in their interaction with each other, produce a recognisable way of life.
