What does the KNM exam entail?

The Knowledge of Dutch Society exam tests your knowledge of Dutch institutions, rules and norms and values. There are eight themes covered in the exam. For each theme final goals have been formulated that indicate what you need to know or be able to do to pass the exam. Below you will find an overview of the eight themes, with a few examples of the final objectives for each theme.

Work and Income

Know how to look for (new) work quickly and efficiently
Understand the rights and obligations of employees and employers
Be able to deal with discrimination at work

Manners, values and norms

Understand how people in the Netherlands interact with each other
Be able to deal with customs, values and norms that may be different from your own
Understand the purpose and customs of cultural associations and sports associations

Living

Be able to find a home
Be able to request energy supplies and means of communication (e.g., telephone and television) for the home
Understand what the standards are in the Netherlands for how you treat your home, garden and garbage

Health and health care

Know how to use family doctors
Know how pharmacies and dentists work
Understand how health insurance works

History and geography

Knowledge about Dutch history
Knowing which past events are sensitive in the Netherlands, such as World War II
Having geographic knowledge of the Netherlands

Bodies

Understand what services the municipality provides
Be able to deal with taxes
Know what duties the police have

State structure and rule of law

Knowing how to act according to the Dutch constitution
Being able to deal with the separation of church and state
Keeping to the law

Education and parenting

Being able to use the Dutch education system
Taking responsibility for your own minor children
Knowing how much education costs and being able to apply for provisions to pay for these costs, such as study financing

In het KNM-examen worden bijvoorbeeld vragen gesteld over wonen, gezondheidszorg en de geschiedenis van Nederland.

KNM-examen doen: hoe gaat dat?

Je doet het volledige KNM-examen op de computer, bij een van de locaties van de Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (DUO). Het examen bestaat uit korte filmpjes met verschillende situaties die typisch zijn voor Nederland. Bijvoorbeeld over boodschappen doen of naar de dokter gaan. Na elk filmpje moet je een vraag beantwoorden. De filmpjes en de vragen zijn op A2-niveau. Dit is het taalniveau dat je moet hebben om het inburgeringsexamen te kunnen halen. Bij het KNM-examen zijn vooral luistervaardigheid en leesvaardigheid belangrijk.
