Students who learn Dutch as a second language are likely to want to do more than learn vocabulary, do exercises, and take listening tests. Once they have a good command of Dutch, they are interested in ‘real’ novels and stories. There is more than enough literature, of course, but which authors are best to begin with when learning Dutch? De omgevallen boekenkast offers a helping hand in making selections from modern Dutch literature.

The anthology contains 22 short stories, poems and excerpts from various authors, including Judith Herzberg, J.J. Voskuil, Abdelkader Benali, Remco Campert, Willem Frederik Hermans, and Anne Frank. The excerpts are preceded by an introductory text about the author. Difficult words are defined and each story is accompanied by a number of exercises.
