Why is KNS now KNM?
There are two reasons that the name of the KNS exam has changed into ‘Knowledge of Dutch Society’ (‘Kennis van de Nederlandse Maatschappij’). Firstly, in 2015, the content of the old KNS exam was modified a little. Secondly, a new exam component was added to the integration exam in 2015: Orientation on the Dutch Labour Market (Oriëntatie op de Nederlandse Arbeidsmarkt; ONA). The components KNM and ONA have since then together been the ‘Knowledge of the Dutch Community’ (‘Kennis van de Nederlandse Samenleving’) component of the integration exam.
If you are looking for information or lesson materials for the KNM exam, you often encounter the term ‘KNS’. This means the old KNS exam.
Knowledge of the Dutch Community (KNS) and the basic integration abroad exam
It may be a little confusing, but there is another exam called ‘Knowledge of the Dutch Community’. This is a component of the basic integration abroad exam that some people have to take before they come to the Netherlands.
The KNS component of this exam is not the same as the KNM exam. It is also about how we interact with each other in the Netherlands, but all the questions of this exam are about the film Naar Nederland. With this film, people prepare for the basic integration abroad exam. The way you prepare for this exam is therefore different from the KNM exam.
Can I still use lesson material for the KNS exam to prepare for the KNM exam?
In many teaching materials, such as textbooks, there is still mention of ‘KNS’ instead of ‘KNM’. You can use this lesson material to prepare for the KNM exam. The content of the exam is almost unchanged. The main difference between the two exams is that the KNM exam is done completely on the computer.
A lot of teaching material has been revised since the introduction of the new KNM exam. Below are some publications of Boom NT2 with which you can prepare for the KNM exam.
